The second fully revised and greatly expanded edition of the Atlas of Clinical Fungi appeared in 2000. The modest and very competitive price of this standard work has certainly contributed to the popularity of the first edition. In recent years the application of molecular biology has become within reach for many routine laboratories. The new Atlas will provide ample molecular data for the majority of clinically relevant fungi. It will set a standard for innovative techniques in medical mycology. In addition, antifungal susceptibility data will be given for most species, which will provide essential knowledge for the clinician in view of adequate therapy.

Further major changes in the second edition are the following:

  • All clinically relevant fungi will now be illustrated with line drawings and photoplates according to a standardized schedule throughout the book;
  • Numerous emerging opportunistic species introduced in recent literature are included. Among these are recently described agents of brain infection such as Ramichloridium mackenziei and Cladophialophora modesta, several Trichoderma species, and many others;
  • The dermatophytes are treated in line with the latest molecular publications on these fungi, and ample molecular data are provided for their reliable identification;
  • Recommended BioSafety Level classifications are listed with each species;
  • Antifungal susceptibility data are provided for a large number of taxa, yeasts as well as filamentous fungi;
  • The amount of references to medical and taxonomic literature is expanded considerably;
  • Molecular data include rDNA SSU restriction maps for genera and rDNA ITS restriction maps for species, as well as phylogenetic overviews of the fungal Kingdom in general and for many important group in more detail.
  • Full nomenclature is provided with each species;
  • Twice as many yeasts are treated, in much more detail, including physiology and molecular biology for each species as well as tables summarizing differential diagnostics;
  • Physiological profiles are provided not only for the yeasts but also for many filamentous and black yeast-like fungi;
  • A list of doubtful names and insufficiently proven clinical cases is provided, such that reference is given to more than 3400 fungal names that have appeared in the medical literature.
